I enjoyed the three nights at Gretchen’s renovated farmhouse, the first time I had see it since extensive remodeling. Earlier that week my niece Anne had departed for Seattle for a temporary job working for the Obama campaign, and she called after an 18 hour day of neighborhood canvassing expressing serious doubts about her desire or ability to stick with it. I told Gretchen I thought it would be a dose of the real world that would provide a valuable experience for her that she would look back on one day.
